Whilst we’re still waiting for the League to issue the fixtures for the season, we have finalised the details of when/where the home games will be played. If possible, we will also try to play the away games on the same day, but these have to be agreed with the opposition Managers first.

In addition to the league fixtures, the coaches and managers will be looking at arranging some friendlies and entering into festivals or competitions, and they will provide more details nearer the time.

The winner of the 2011 Fantasy League was Ash Spencer with 5100 points. Mark Holloway was 2nd only 5 points behind with 5095 and Andy Salmon was 3rd with 4984.

Petersfield Cricket Club held their end of season presentation evenings for the colts at Herne Farm Leisure Centre and for the seniors at Petersfield Golf Club. At Herne Farm, Nearly 200 colts and their families heard how the club is making excellent progress on all fronts which is leading to players enjoying their cricket and also enjoying some success. They celebrated the achievements of all the players and Chairman Nick Blakstad handed out the awards.

Club captain, Andy Salmon summarised a very successful season for the club. The senior 1^st and 2^nd XI teams both achieved promotion and now the club has its three senior teams evenly spread between divisions with two divisions between each team. This provides a great opportunity for all the colts to progress through the different levels of senior cricket as they develop. The Indoor team were runners up in their league and also achieved promotion. The U17s reached semi-finals of County Cup putting them in the top 4 teams in the County. The club started a midweek team in the Ashurst League and a second Sunday team to give more players the opportunity to play. At different times of the season, the U9s, U11s and the girls’ teams played at the Rose Bowl prior to County and Test matches. The girls played a game during the break at the first test match to be held there. The colts have now grown to over 170 players and the club now runs 10 teams with two teams at U9 and U11 level. The U9, U11s and U15s now have a team playing in the A divisions of the South East Hampshire League. Gabriel Broadhurst represented the County at U10 and Ben Friend and Nicky Caddick represented the District at U15. The club also had 6 other representatives at District level. The club have constructed a new scoreboard at the Heath ground and have converted the old toilet block into a grounds store.

Andy salmon thanked Petersfield Town Council for the continued support that they provide the club with the grounds work and also thanked grounds men, John and Jonathan Sutherland who prepared 87 different strips to play on during the summer.

Marcus Sampson was awarded the prestigious Peter Hughes Memorial Trophy for outstanding contributions to the club in the past years. Marcus has played in 1st XI, passed the Level 2 Coaching course and coached the U13s in 2010 and filled in whenever he could in 2011. He has started the Sunday team and has made it the success the club had hoped for and then started the Sunday 2nd XI. Together with Chaz Collett, he was the main driving force behind the Charity day which raised an amazing £4920 for McMillan Nurses

This year he has been responsible for organising the senior 6-a-side tournaments and has always been there to help out.

Chairman Nick Blakstad thanked John Pike for all his efforts over the years as he now steps down from the committee. John has been a member of the club for more years than can be mentioned and still works tirelessly behind the scenes on various projects.

The club particularly thanked the efforts of Mark and Sadie Friend for all their efforts in helping with the colts’ section and liaison with the schools and all the coaches and managers who have put in a huge effort throughout the year and Lisbeth Thomas, the Social Secretary who has co-ordinated the fund raising of over £2,000 to help run the club.

Petersfield CC have nominated 22 players to attend the South East Hampshire Cricket assessment to select a squad for the 2012 Development Centre.

For the players it is recognition of their achievements during the season and provides them with an opportunity to practice with players from other clubs and gain some more experience. Securing a place in the Development Squads is difficult for many reasons so all players are encouraged just to enjoy themselves at the trial.

Congratulations to Andy Clarke and his team who got promoted for the second year running. They had to win their last 5 games and get maximum points and relied on other results to go their way. However they managed to sneak into 3rd place by just 2 points.

The 2nd XI will now play in RD2NE in 2011

It wasn’t until the final results were in that the 2^nd XI knew they were promoted. As well has having to get maximum points, they had to rely on other results going their way. Main rivals, Compton and Chandlers Ford had their match rained off, Steep II beat Aldershot IV and although Medstead won with 21 points, they needed the full 24 points to get past Petersfield. This was the second promotion in 2 years for Andy Clarke and his team and they needed to pull out all the stops in the second half of the season to raise them from their mid table position. They did this by only dropping 2 points in their last 6 matches.

Success was founded on their solid opening partnership of Stuart Smith and ‘keeper Ian Neville and supported by a young bowling attack of Shaun Blanks, Matt Clarke, Liam Charles and Jack Reekie and the more experienced Mike Whyatt. Smith’s leg spinners completed the bowling the attack.

The U17s reached the semi finals of the County Cup with good wins against Grayshott and Ropley but came up against a very good Portsmouth and Southsea team in the semi final.

Petersfield CC officially opened their new electronic scoreboard. The original scorebaord was built in memory of Barry Milner-Smith but had been vandalised over the years. His wife, Jenny, son Ed and grandsons George and William who both play for the club were invited to reopen it.

The original scoreboard was built through the efforts of Nick Bloor and his wife Sue was also there at the new opening.

Both suffered with cancer and it was appropriate on the day that the club presented a cheque for £4920 to Sarah Rice of McMillan for the monies raised as a result of the recent Charity Day.

The funds to pay for the scorebaord were raised through two Waitrose bag packs by the colts and from grants from Petersfield Town Council.

Matt Salmon, who last year qualified as a Level 2 coach, spent many days during the summer at The Rose Bowl, assisting, County teams and Test team Sri Lanka.

He spent most the inaugaral test match at the Rose Bowl in the Sri Lankan dressing room and got a great insight into what goes on behind the scenes.

After the match he met Andrew Strauss.

The Petersfield Macmillan Celebrity Cricket Match on Sunday 5^th June was a huge success, despite the weather on the day being drastically different from the glorious sunshine of the day before. However while many of the surrounding towns and villages were subjected to torrential downpours an umbrella of positivity and fun seemed to shield the Heath Grounds from most of it, and only in the last 10 minutes of play did the rain become more than a few scattered drops here and there.

This is the first year the Petersfield Cricket Club has held this event and around 300 – 350 people made it down to the Heath over the course of the afternoon. Some just popped in for a bite to eat and a drink, others came early and stayed till the end. During the day the Celebs mixed freely with the public, chatting and having their photographs taken and each of them had nothing but praise for the whole day. The relaxed way in which things were run, the accent being on having a wonderfully entertaining, fun & positive afternoon, made being there a real pleasure for everyone.

The Celebrities opened the batting with comedians Mickey D and Neil Dagley (AKA Flange Krammer). Mickey was bowled out in the 2^nd over, but the Umpire called no ball for the bowlers foot being too far over the line (very kind of him!), so he stayed in and went on to make 28 runs before being bowled out. Neil Dagley remained in bat for over half of the teams allotted overs and was finally out for 83 runs, the highest individual score of the day. Commentary by some of the celebs, particularly Tim FitzHigham and Tom Bell, while their side was batting was hilarious and really added to the fun atmosphere of the day. When Petersfield were batting Rufus Hound was the surprise player and star bowler for the Celeb team taking 4 wickets from the Petersfield side. He also scored a respectable 12 runs for his team,,,, not bad for someone who hasn’t played a match since he was at school! The match was very closely fought and was won in the end by Petersfield in the 30^th over of their 35 over innings with just one wicket to spare. All the celeb players had a fantastic time and had nothing but praise for the day. Every one of them also wants to come back again next year, and they are determined to win the cup next time too!

The day wasn’t without it’s drama with the two team captains, both playing as wicket keepers, sustaining injuries which required trips to the hospital. Marcus Sampson for the Petersfield team, and one of the core organisers of the event, got caught in the face by a fast ball in the 6^th over and had to leave for medical attention to a nasty cut on his cheek. He returned, glued back together, and went on to open the batting for Petersfield scoring a glorious 50 runs before generously retiring to allow other players out onto the field. Tim FitzHigham, captain for the Celeb’s, caught a ball directly on the end of his finger. He also left the field in some pain and was diagnosed by one of the club’s first aider’s, Dee Salmon, as having a broken finger. This was splinted on site, but he was also taken to hospital for a full check. On his return Tim got straight back onto the field proving that both captains on the day were tough, dedicated people who loved the game.

The event was a huge success and fantastic example of what a local club can do. A final figure of what was raised on the day for MacMillan will take a while to work out, but initial figures suggest that in excess of £3000 will have been made for the charity. It was very much a team effort with many people from the club organising different areas of the day and a terrific team of volunteers to back them up. Special mention should go to the following core members without whom the event simply couldn’t have happened – Andy & Dee Salmon, Markus Samson, Karen Rothery, Mark Holloway, Lisbeth Thomas, Sarah Rice from MacMillan and finally Chaz Collett from the Petersfield Comedy Club whose contacts in the industry brought the celeb team to town.
